Bill hugged his knees as he waited for the doctor to come and tell him and his waiting friends how his brother was doing. Next to him was Andreas, who put a comforting hand on his shoulder.

Gustav and Georg sat across from them. They were in the waiting room of the hospital. After Tom … yeah, then he called his friends and they met him at the hospital.

“What the hell is taking so long!?” He blurted. He felt almost ready to explode.

“Calm down Bill, there are a lot of other people who got hurt during the storm so we’ll have to wait a little longer than normal.” Gustav said calmly.

“Mr. Listing, why don’t you let me take a look at your arm? It looks like it could use extra bandaging.” A female nurse came up to Georg with a sweet smile. She was rather nice looking, but Georg couldn’t think like that at the moment.

“Uh, yeah, okay.” He really hadn’t noticed how bloody his bandages had gotten. He’d been too worried about Tom to think about it.

So he got up and followed the nurse to a room. “See you later guys.” He said before leaving.

The others waved goodbye, then sighed, except Bill.

He seemed deep in thought. He was so worried about Tom. What was with the lightning that hit him? Why was it red? What if it hurt him? Or even worse …

“No! Don’t think like that!” Bill cried out, unaware that he had said it out loud.

Gustav and Andreas looked at him worried.

“You okay Bill?” Andreas asked sweetly.

“Uh … um—“ Bill started, but was interrupted by a tall doctor with a clipboard in hand.

“Excuse me, are you Bill Kaulitz?”

“Yes, that’s me.” Bill answered anxiously.

“My name is Dr. Darryl. I have some information about your brother here for you.”

“Is he okay!? Please tell me he’s okay! Can I see him??” Bill blurted, his words practically oozing with worry.

“Yes, he’s alright. For now at least. He’s been having a fever on and off for the past couple of hours. But for right now he’s down to normal temperature, and you may see him.”

They all sprung up as soon as he said that. The doctor frowned. “I’m sorry. Only family members are permitted to see him at this time.”

Andreas and Gustav sank back into their seats. It wasn’t fair. They wanted to see Tom too! And they were practically like family. Doctors were always so insensitive about these things.

“I’m sorry guys. I’ll tell you how Tom’s doing when I get back.” Bill said reassuringly, then followed the doctor anxiously to Tom’s room.

The doctor held the door open for Bill. He thanked him and walked in. The doctor didn’t follow; he just quickly left, closing the door behind him. It was almost like he was avoiding something. But what?

Bill just shrugged it off. He knew doctors could be weird sometimes with the things they see, so he didn’t think it mattered at the time. He turned around and the first thing he saw was Tom in his bed. He was sleeping.

Bill sat in the chair next to his bed and gazed at his sleeping brother.

He looked so peaceful. So perfect … He looked so beautiful with his dreadlocks all around his pillow, like a mane.

Bill smiled sweetly at him, gently stroking his cheek. He stirred a bit, but didn’t wake up.

His smile soon faded, and was replaced by tears. “I’m so sorry … It’s all my fault you’re here. It should’ve been me … Me, not you.”

He took his brother’s hand into his and squeezed it lightly. It felt rather cold.

He looked back to his brother and saw that he looked pale. Paler than he did before. That wasn’t good. Was his fever coming back?

Bill put a hand on his forehead, then ran it down to his cheek. He was definitely feeling warm.

Bill was getting worried as his twin’s peaceful expression began to change to distress, and he began tossing and turning. He must’ve been having another nightmare.

“Tomi …” Bill said soothingly as he stroked his arm to calm him down. Then, as he was about to say something, he remembered the talk they had before, in the living room. So he decided against it, even though he wanted nothing more than to relieve his brother of the stress he was experiencing at that moment.

It continued for about 10 minutes, and then he finally began to calm down. Bill felt unbearably guilty about not waking him, but he knew it had to be done. He needed to know the nightmares going on inside of Tom’s head that bothered him so much, and this was the only way.

Tom let out a slight groan, then slowly opened his eyes.

Bill’s face lit up, instantly forgetting about the dream and let out a squeal of happiness. “Tomi!”

Tom looked at Bill groggily and smiled, trying to focus his vision. He was so dizzy for some reason. “Hey …”

“Damn it!” A shadowy figure cursed under his breath. “This wasn’t supposed to happen! This messes everything up.”

“Now, wait a minute. We could use this to our advantage.” Said the slightly shorter one, with a bit of a raspy sounding voice. “If the boy somehow lives through the phases, we could use him.”

The taller figure paused and thought for a moment. “I don’t know. The chances of surviving such a toxic experiment are slim to none—“

“But still possible! Don’t forget; the strike didn’t instantly kill him. That’s a good sign. He could possibly be the answer to our problems. He could be the one!”

“And what if he doesn’t live!? What if he dies and we have nothing left of our creation? We didn’t go through months of agonizing experiments and failing test runs for nothing! I’m telling you, it’s extremely risky. We should fix things now before it’s too late and we have to start over.”

“Okay, fine! Have it your way. But I really think this kid could help us out.”

“ALRIGHT! Alright … here’s the plan then. We’ll watch him for a while and see what happens. If he doesn’t die and the creation continues to take hold of him, we’ll use him.”

“What if he lives, but things don’t go as planned? What if he starts to mutate, like the others?”

The taller one sighed, “Then we kill him.”

“What?? But, he’s so young still …”

“I know it’s cruel, but we can’t risk anymore backfires. If something goes wrong, he could endanger the balance of nature. He is no longer a human boy anymore. He’s now our creation. And because of this, we must take responsibility.”

The shorter one sighed and nodded, agreeing to the terms of their mistake.

“Good. Now, you have to do something for me …”

It was about midnight now, and Tom had fallen back asleep. His fever was acting up again, and Bill didn’t want to wear him out.

He still sat next to him, humming his favorite songs to his brother as he slept. He didn’t know if he could hear him or not, but it made him feel better.

Bill wanted to join him and nap a while. He was dreadfully tired. But he couldn’t sleep knowing Tom could possibly have another nightmare.

Before Tom fell asleep, he had told Bill what he remembered of the dream. Bill shivered as he thought back to the details of the nightmares.

There were two men in the dream. They had me strapped to some sort of table. I couldn’t get away! The room was glowing red and I could see in the distance, tubes, with some sort of creatures in them. They looked so strange, yet so human-like. Then they cut me open and it felt like they were played with my insides or something! It was so real … I literally felt pains in my heart, even when I woke up.

That’s what Tom had said. Exactly what he said. The words scared Bill. Did this have anything to do with the storm, and the red glowing lightning that had struck him? It was all so confusing, and frightening. But Bill had to get to the bottom of this. He wouldn’t rest until he knew entirely what was wrong with his brother.

“Bill? Hey, Bill!”

The sudden familiar voice snapped Bill back to reality. It was Tom. He was awake and looking at Bill worried.

“What? Huh? Oh, I’m fine Tomi,” He said with a big grin, “How are you feeling?”

“I could be better.” He replied as he put a hand over his still tired eyes.

Bill frowned. “The doctor said you’ve had a fever. It’s been going on and off lately, and they can’t figure out why. It’s not an ordinary side effect of getting struck by lightning.”

Tom looked up at Bill, confused. “Lightning? When was I hit by lightning?”

Bill tilted his head a bit. Did he not remember? Maybe the lightning had caused amnesia or something.

“Yes, lightning. Remember? During the storm?”

Tom didn’t seem to be listening. He seemed to be staring off somewhere.

“Tom!”

Tom jumped a bit and looked at Bill. “Huh? Oh, well … um. Uh ... Wait, what?”

“The lightning during the storm. Do you remember?”

Tom blinked tiredly, still seeming confused. “What lightning?”

“… You sure you’re okay?” Bill asked worriedly. Tom was completely out of it.

Tom smiled weakly. “Hey, don’t worry about it. If it’s only a fever then I should be fine and out of this hospital in no time, right?”

Bill smiled slightly and nodded a little. He wanted to believe him, but part of him knew it wouldn’t be as simple as that.

A moment of awkwardness passed, then Tom turned to his brother. They smiled at each other. At that moment, Tom felt like he could just jump out of his hospital bed and fly. He had been feeling like that about Bill for a while now.

He felt that this was a good opportunity for him to express his feelings. But he didn’t know if Bill felt the same way. He was scared to say anything. He was scared of pushing his baby brother away if he didn’t understand. He could never live with himself if he knew his only brother—his whole world—would reject him for feelings he couldn’t control.

He had to make a decision, and fast. Should he tell him, or not?

“… Bill?”

Bill noticed the seriousness in his brother’s tone and expression, and frowned. “What is it?”

“I … well, there’s something I need to tell you. Something I’ve been hiding for a long time. Something I need you to know …”

Bill’s eyes grew wide with ambition. Was he about to tell him what he thought he was? What he yearned to hear? “It’s okay, you can tell me.”

“I …”

“Yes?”

They were suddenly interrupted by the sudden opening of the door. It was Gustav and Andreas.

“Hey! You’re awake!” Andreas squealed happily. He was almost as feminine as Bill was sometimes.

Tom beamed at them. “Hey!”

He was nearly strangled to death as Gustav and Andreas took turns hugging him.

“How are you feeling?”

“Eh, I’m fine. Where’s Georg?”

“Oh, he hurt his arm. He’s with some pretty nurse getting X-rays. We just saw him, he’s doing fine.” Andreas answered cheerfully.

“Oh, okay.”

“Hey, I thought it was family members only for visiting.” Bill blurted.

“The doctor said we could!” Gustav replied happily.

Bill was happy to see them, but at the same time annoyed with their timing. He wanted to know what Tom needed to tell him.

“… Did you notice anything … well, weird .. about the doctor at all??” Bill asked them.

Andreas and Gustav looked at each other, then at Bill.

“Weird? No, I don’t think so. Why?” Gustav finally said.

“Well, I just ... he ... Oh, never mind I said anything then.”

The others looked at him, furrowing their brows, but shrugged it off.

“Alright, well, sense we know Tom’s okay, let’s go report to Georg. I’m sure he’ll be happy to know how he’s doing.” Andreas suggested to Gustav, who happily agreed.

“Yeah, he’s pretty worried. He was a bit upset that he couldn’t come see Tom too. We’ll be back later.”

Bill and Tom nodded and Gustav and Andreas left the room, closing the door behind them.

“Ow! That hurts!” Georg whined as the nurse bandaged his arm.

“I’m sorry, but I have to wrap it tightly or it won’t heal properly.” She answered simply.

Georg let out a small whimper before there was a knock at the door.

“Who is it?” The nurse asked.

“Gustav and Andreas. Can we come in?” Gustav answered.

“Ah. Mr. Listing will be out in a minute. I’m almost—“

“Ow! Gustav! Andreas! Save me!” Georg joked.

“Stop being such a whiny baby, Mr. Listing, I’m almost done.” The nurse laughed.

Andreas and Gustav snickered.

“Anyway, he’ll be out in a minute!”

After the nurse was done “torturing” Georg, he came out with a nice clean bandage on his arm. He thanked the nurse and rejoined Gustav and Andreas in the waiting room.

“So, how’s Tom doing?” He asked with a bit of a smile.

“He’s doing fine. The doctor said he could leave tomorrow if his fever stays down.” Andreas chirped.

“Great!” Georg answered.

“And what about you?” Gustav answered with a devilish grin.

“Oh, my arm’s fine, it’s just—“

”No, not your arm, moron. We know you’re going to be fine. We’re talking about that nurse.” Andreas chuckled, giving Georg a nudge in the good arm.

“What about her?” Georg tried to hide his blushing face, but it didn’t seem to work.

“You know what about.” Gustav smirked.

“Oh, it was nothing, really. She was just helping me out, that’s all.”

“Sure, of course.” Andreas joked.

“Hey, let’s go see Tom! I didn’t get a chance to see him yet.” Georg suggested to quickly change the subject. Although he really did want to see Tom, too. He was pretty worried.

Both Andreas and Gustav gave him a ‘you’re not off the hook just yet’ grin and nodded in false defeat.

They scurried back up to Tom’s room to find both Tom and Bill napping. Bill had somehow squeezed into the bed with Tom.

They all smiled at such a cute sight. They hadn’t seen Bill sneak into Tom’s bed since they were little.

Georg looked at his watch. It was half past midnight.

“I guess we should just spend the night here. It’s already past midnight, so there’s no sense in leaving now.” He suggested, letting out a yawn.

“Yeah. Let’s go ask for blankets and stuff.” Andreas added, returning Georg’s yawn. That made Gustav yawn right after, then going back to Georg.

“Hey! Cut it out you guys!” Georg laughed.

Wake up, beast!

Tom stirred for a moment at the sudden harsh voice.

I said wake up!

Tom suddenly heard the crack of a whip, and then a sharp pain in his chest, causing him to flinch and snap his eyes open.

He could tell he was chained to a wall, he couldn’t move his arms.

“What? ... Where am I?” He asked softly as his eyes frantically dashed around the room. He felt different. Like he wasn’t himself.

In front of him stood a figure. He couldn’t quite make out what he looked like, he was too dizzy and it was dark in the room. But he could tell he wasn’t friendly. He had a whip in his hand.

Tom could feel blood trickling down his chest where the whip had hit him. He let out a growl. It almost startled him how animal-like his own growl sounded.

The man grinned. “Welcome home, my dear pet. Would you like to see your development?”

Tom tilted his head. “What do you mean? I’m no one’s pet!” He snapped. Once again, his voice didn’t sound at all like his. It was ragged and deep, almost like some talking werewolf from a movie.

The man grinned again, and without saying anything, he moved out of the way for Tom to see his reflection in a red tube.

He gasped and widened his eyes. What he saw was frightening. Was that really him?

What he saw in his reflection was something that wasn’t him. It couldn’t be him ... could it?

Both his inner and outer eyes were glowing a brilliant crimson red. He had large fangs, and even larger nails... No, not nails; claws. He now had sharp, jagged claws. And he had what looked like large, scaly plates aligned all the way up his arms.

His hat was missing, and his dreadlocks twisted and tangled all around his face, making him look even more beast-like. Never before had he been so afraid. Especially of himself.

“What ... what have you done to me!?” He finally got out, his voice sounding less and less like himself.

The man let out a laugh. “Why, my dear pet, I’ve simply turned you. You see, you are the thirteenth of twelve subjects in my experiment.” He then gestured to twelve red-glowing tubes in the distance.

In each of them was a different, more complex looking “experiment” following the last. With the glow of the dark crimson-like liquid—much like his own eyes—holding them inside, he couldn’t see much detail in them besides their silhouette.

Tom stared at them in horror and disbelief. “And they...”

“They were all human once, just like you. I merely ... well, let’s just say I’ve ‘unleashed the beasts within’. Just like I did with you. Although, with you, it’s different. I’ve not yet seen your hidden powers, but by the look of your evolution, it’s something quite magnificent! Unlike the rest of them, you seem unique beyond uniqueness!”

“Why are you doing this to me!? And to them!? What did we ever do to you!?” Tom half screamed, half growled. He was on the verge of either crying his eyes out or going homicidal.

“Simply for scientific reasons, my pet. You and the others were not chosen by anyone or anything in particular, you were just there when it happened. And you were one of them. The lucky thirteenth. The final step to our scientific breakthrough! Now, wake up. And show me your true powers!”

“Tom!!”

Tom shot up, wide awake and panting hard, sweating profusely. Around him stood Bill, Georg, Gustav and Andreas, all staring at him with worry in their expressions.

“Tom? Are you okay?” Bill asked, putting a hand on his forehead.

“Was it another nightmare or something?” Gustav added.

Tom just nodded, not even really paying attention to the questions. He felt distant, and looked it as well.

He gently laid back in his bed. Was that man in his dream really telling the truth? Was it even a dream at all, or was it some sort of premonition? The questions burned in his head, as did another rising fever.
